For the first time Australia will have a National Rail Safety Regulator with responsibility for regulatory oversight across all of Australia. This will include national laws, operational policies and process, planning and reporting, training, education, research and safety promotion together with overall leadership and co-ordination of regulatory functions.

Delivery of the regulatory functions will be undertaken by staff directly employed by the NRSR or through Service Agreements with State and Territory Governments.
